LANIKAI IN A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

Barbara Roman, award winning mixed media artist, will be debuting a unique new medium as the Featured Artist at Tradewinds Gallery, Windward Mall, during the month of May. As a former New Yorker, Ms. Roman sees paradise through captivatingly different eyes. Her works range in size from the panoramic 8 x 39 inch painting of Lanikai Beach, to miniatures that regardless of size, have a sense of monumental.

Check it out and enjoy Ms. Roman’s blending of her two worlds.

LANIKAI POOCH SCHOOL TO RESUME

Lanikai dog owners have another opportunity to educate their four-legged friends in good manners and obedience at the next Dog Training Class to begin on Saturday June 7th at Lanikai Park.

This increasingly popular program will be facilitated by Heather Irashko who can be contacted at  396-9500.  Woof, woof!!

BARBARA “HOPPY” SMITH HONORED BY WINDWARD ROTARY CLUB

Mrs. Roberta “Byrde” Cestare, President of the Rotary Club of Windward Oahu announced that Mrs. Barbara “Hoppy” Smith had been selected as this year’s recipient of the “Service Above Self” award for her untiring volunteer activities. This award is given annually to a non-Rotarian Windward resident whose volunteerism has improved the quality of life for the Windward community. At a Mid-Pacific Country Club banquet on April 26th. attended by over 200 friends and neighbors, Hoppy was honored for over thirty years of working with Windward youth by coaching soccer, paddlers of the Lanikai Canoe Club, and volunteering in the local schools.

Her work while a member of the Lanikai Association Board was instrumental in preventing development of conservation land in Lanikai, thus averting residential development on the ridge.

Other activities include but are not limited to: Hawaii Theatre, Hawaii Printmakers, Honolulu Academy of Arts, and extensive volunteer activities with American Cancer Society. This writer has personally witnessed her energy with The Lanikai Mortgage Players, The Lanikai Craft Faire, the Lanikai Canoe Club and the “Lanikite”. Mahalo and aloha to Hoppy!

Look for the Lanikai Dog Show coming this summer. A canine benefit for the Lanikai Playground!!! Watch for details.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Nighttime patrons of Lanikai Beach continue to engage in LATE NIGHT drinking, excessive noise, litter, obnoxious car stereo volume and disturbances which plague Lanikai residents, particularly those who live alongside beach accesses.

Since the monitoring of Kailua Boat Ramp and Kailua Beach Park, the party has moved to Lanikai where there is little police interference.

Unfortunately the police response that does occur is not aggressive enough to deter the offenders from repeating this behavior.

Discussion occurred at the recent Board concerning possible solutions to this problem:

· Signs at accesses regarding behavior

· Restrict parking in these areas during the evening

· Restrict access to the Beach during nighttime hours at Association-owned rights-of-way.

I would appreciate community input on these or other solutions. A good night’s sleep for my family and myself is becoming an infrequent privilege.
Sincerely, Robert Clancey
